Antique toy bank in the shape of an elephant with an old painted seat and blanket. The trunk and tail move. Possibly Hubley Manufacture.
Heavy cast iron bank in the shape of an elephant with well-detailed casting. The elephant has fringe, skin wrinkles, strap lines etc. She has a white finish with the blanket, strap and seat painted in red, yellow, and green. The fringe on the blanket is a pale yellow with some gold on the strap and blanket. The hand painting was done very professionally, and we believe during time of manufacture. The finish feels smooth to the touch. When the tail is lifted the trunk rises backward to deposit the coin into a slit near the head. There is a slot flat head screw on the side on the strap to open the bank to remove the coins. There are holes in the elephant’s belly to see the coins. The trunk, tail and ears were attached to the main casting of the body by a screw.
The bank has no manufacturer’s mold marks or labels.
There is wear to the painted finish with a few rust spots and the metal showing through the white painted finish in several places. It looks like dirt but it is the metal from beneath. The gold and paint on the straps, blanket, and seat is worn in spots. There are some paint chips on the ears. The irregularity of the wear points to the bank being old. Paint on and around the slotted flat screw has chipped off from when it was opened.
